Lawrence has expressed that she finds it inappropriate fitting to speak out against the Trump presidency, worried it could worsen unhelpful debate and further divisions within the country.

Speaking with media, she reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I felt like I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, election after election, public figures fail to influence in any way on who people vote for.”

Lawrence added, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on a matter that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the country apart.”

Changing Allegiances

Lawrence has spoken candidly about backing right and leftwing candidates in past elections. Growing up with conservative Republicans in her home state, she supported John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the Democratic party and explaining she realized during Obama’s administration that supporting the GOP was voting against her individual liberties as a female citizen.

Several years ago, she commented that a Trump victory would be “a disaster” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. During the most recent election, she gave her endorsement to the Democratic nominee, “because I believe she’s an excellent choice and I am confident that she will take all necessary steps to safeguard women’s health rights.”

Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her opposition to Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence celebrities have over the voting intentions was emphasized by Trump’s victory.

“Another four years appears changed,” noted she of his leadership. “Because he stated his intentions. We understood his record for his first term. He was transparent. And that’s the option selected.”

Lawrence is currently promoting her new film, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a new mother who faces challenges with her psychological well-being in a remote area. During a press conference for the project in the film festival, Lawrence commented on the conflict in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s devastating. What’s occurring is no less than a genocide and it’s terrible.”

The actress elaborated by saying that she was disappointed by “the lack of civility in the conversations of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be accepted to the younger generation today. It’s going to be normal to them that politicians lie.”

“I felt anxiety regarding my baby,” she commented, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I started taking a drug called Zurzuvae and I took it for a short period and it made a difference.”
