{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what happened following that moment"
